Allergies - Symptoms and Treatments

Allergies inflict many people all over the world. They are caused when the immune system acts abnormal to what would normally be harmless substances called allergens in nature. Allergens can be inhaled, swallowed or come in contact with a person’s skin.

Common causes of allergies are food, pollen, hay fever, asthma, medicine, insect bites and bee stings. Allergy symptoms can be mild, moderate or very severe with symptoms ranging from rashes, watery eyes, itchiness and hives to difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, dizziness and throat swelling and severe anaphylaxis.

Common treatments and advice on care for mild to moderate cases are antihistamines, decongestants, corticosteroids and other common medications. For more severe reactions, Epipen injections are giving filled with the medicine Epinephrine.

There are natural allergy remedies that can be tried as well which include consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. These types of foods are not so much a treatment, but more of a way to prevent mild allergies. Omega-3 fatty acids fight inflammation and can be found in foods such as walnuts, flax seed oil, fish, eggs and grass fed meats.

Other natural remedies include natural nutrients and immune enhancers. These would include Vitamin A, C and E, calcium and magnesium as well as zinc, echinacea, quercitin, acidophilus, selenium and Vitamin B complex.

Mild allergies can be treated at home with an antihistamine or decongestant, however, for more severe reactions such as difficulty in breathing and throat swelling, it is imperative that you get yourself to an emergency room promptly as these reactions can result in death if not taken care of immediately. Always check with your doctor before taking any new type of allergy treatment, medication or remedy. Eating the right foods such as the ones mentioned above can help to prevent mild allergy problems.
