How to get better sleep

Sleep is not an indulgence. It is a necessity. You don’t need to be working a locum doctor job to know your body needs a good 6 – 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep everyday to facilitate, among other things, the proper functioning of all the vital body parts. Ironically, in this hectic world the hours prescribed above is like a dream for many!

The amount of sleep you need changes as you age and along with your hormonal changes, for example, during pregnancy. By getting the right amount of sleep, your mornings would be fresh and you would feel energetic throughout the day.

To get more sleep it is advised that your bedroom should be dark and quiet when you are sleeping. The temperatures are supposed to be on the lower side for a good sleep. Try getting a big and comfortable bed if you find the present one is quite quirky! It is also advised that you reserve your bedroom only for sleeping and having sex; keep your television and computer elsewhere.

Exercise is very important for getting the right amount of sleep. If you are just simply lazing around the whole day without taking part in some physical activity, you tend to sleep at the wrong hours which may affect your health.

Drinking caffeine products, smoking and eating should be done at least 3 hours before you go to sleep. Wear the right night clothes before you get onto your bed. Short pants and pajamas are advisable for feeling comfortable.

Don’t overeat before you sleep as it may cause digestion problems and you may not sleep properly. Music can sometimes soothe your mind, though it is not the case with everyone. Meditation is a great way of keeping your mind at ease and also relieve stress. It is good to meditate in the morning and nights alike. Try taking a bubble bath before you go to sleep as it will pamper your body and make you feel tender and sleepy.
